KONTECA METHOD
How we approach every project
At KONTECA, we do not deliver standard projects. Every vessel is different, every deck has its own geometry, and every owner has distinct priorities. That is why our process always begins with the reality of the boat, not from a catalogue.01 — Initial contact and consultation
You can reach us by phone, email or contact form. We will respond within 24 hours to understand your project and arrange a no-obligation technical visit.02 — Onboard technical inspection
A KONTECA technician visits the vessel at the marina or shipyard. We assess the current condition of the deck, the structure and the project requirements. We take photographs and technical notes.03 — Technical proposal
Within 48–72 hours, we provide a proposal including the recommended system, full technical specifications, material samples upon request, execution timeline and a detailed quotation.04 — Precision templating
Once the project is confirmed, we carry out full deck templating, section by section. This stage is critical to ensure the perfect fit of every component.05 — Workshop fabrication
All components are manufactured in our workshop under strict quality control. Prior to installation, each element is inspected to ensure it meets the project specifications.06 — Installation and handover
Installation is carried out at the marina or shipyard according to the agreed schedule. We provide full technical documentation, including material certificates, warranties and a maintenance protocol.FAQ
Questions for professional captains
How do I know if the deck of the boat I manage really needs replacing or if it can last longer?
We assess it with no obligation. With photographs of its current condition or an on-site visit, we can give you a technical opinion on whether the deck has reached the point where intervention is needed or whether it still has margin. We do not recommend replacement if it is not necessary: it is a costly job, and we prefer you to trust our long-term judgement.
How much operational downtime does a deck replacement involve?
It depends on the length of the boat and the scope of the work. For boats between 15 and 25 metres, a full replacement usually requires between 10 and 20 days of work on board, excluding the prior fabrication carried out in the workshop. Part of the fabrication is done at our facilities to reduce the time the boat remains immobilised. Before issuing a quote, we provide a committed timeframe in writing.
Who do I coordinate with during the project? Is there a dedicated point of contact?
Yes. Your point of contact throughout the entire process is Sergio Maldonado. From the initial assessment to final delivery, you will have a single technical reference person. We do not delegate to third parties without your knowledge.
Can I recommend you to the owner with real assurance that you will meet the agreed deadlines?
Yes. The quotation includes a committed timeframe. If anything affects it, we will notify you in advance and look for a solution together. We do not disappear or pass the problem on to the marina or the owner.
Can you work inside an active marina without causing problems?
Yes. We have experience working in marinas and boatyards with strict regulations. We coordinate with the marina before starting, comply with working hours and take responsibility for keeping the work area clean. We do not create conflicts or leave unresolved issues.
What are your usual payment terms?
The work is structured in three payments: an initial deposit when the quotation is signed, usually 60%, an interim payment at the start of installation, 30%, and the final balance upon delivery. The exact terms are stated in each quotation. We do not start any work without a confirmed deposit.
Questions for owners and management companies
What impact does a deck in poor condition have on the resale value of the boat?
It is one of the first elements any buyer or surveyor will assess. A deteriorated deck can significantly reduce the perceived value of the boat, regardless of the condition of the hull or machinery. A well-installed deck, with warranty documentation and high-end materials, becomes a documented sales argument.
Is there a risk that the final result will not match the level of the boat?
We can show you comparable projects before you commit. We work with materials from leading manufacturers and carry out our own installations. The level of finish can be verified before signing the quotation.
What happens if there is a problem after delivery?
The first point of contact is always Sergio directly. We handle any issue arising from the installation at no additional cost. For the material, we provide the manufacturer’s warranty documentation at the proposal stage.
How are payments structured and what happens if changes arise during the project?
The quotation is fixed: the scope is defined before the work begins. If something unforeseen appears during execution, which is uncommon when the assessment is carried out properly, we inform you before taking action and agree on the next steps together. We do not invoice extras without your prior approval.
Can you also manage coordination with the marina or boatyard?
Yes. We coordinate directly with the port environment for everything related to the execution: access, working hours, work regulations and cleaning. We do not pass this responsibility on to the client.
Questions for marina and boatyard managers
How do you manage work inside an active marina?
We always coordinate with the marina before starting any work. We confirm working hours, access to the boat, cleaning protocols and any operational restrictions. We do not enter a marina without knowing exactly what we can and cannot do there.
What happens if an incident occurs during the project that affects the surrounding area?
We resolve it ourselves. We do not pass problems on to the marina or expect the marina to manage anything that is our responsibility. If anything arises, Sergio is the point of contact and we deal with it directly.
Do you have experience working in marinas in the area?
Yes, we have experience in several marinas and boatyards along the Costa del Sol — Campo de Gibraltar area. If you need references for specific locations, we can provide them.
How does the process work if you want to include us as a recommended supplier?
It is simple. We introduce ourselves, explain the type of work we do and the profile of boat we work with. If an owner or captain asks you for a deck specialist, you simply mention us. We do not ask for exclusivity or special conditions.
General questions about materials
What is the difference between natural teak and high-end synthetic teak?
Natural teak offers an unmatched aesthetic and proven durability over decades, but it requires more maintenance and comes at a higher cost. High-end synthetic teak has improved enormously in recent years: it offers similar performance in terms of durability and comfort, with lower maintenance requirements and a slightly lower cost. Which option is best for your boat depends on its use, your budget and your aesthetic preference. We assess this with you in the proposal.
Can I choose the material, or do you decide for me?
The decision is yours. Our role is to advise you with technical criteria and show you the real options that fit your boat and how you use it. The final choice always belongs to the client or the captain.
